This time, József Balázs, one of the most talented orchestrators and jazz pianists of his generation, took Bartók's series For Children in his hands. Recorded by a number of Hungarian and foreign performers, including András Schiff and Zoltán Kocsis, the cycle's melodies, written in the language of children but with crystallized wisdom, open a window onto a complex and multifaceted musical space. On his album Csillagkép távolság (Far Beyond Constellation), József Balázs and his quintet invite listeners on a harmonic adventure that sheds a unique and new light on some of Bartók's movements. The album's songs range from lively compositions to more contemplative, sometimes melancholic ones, always starting from Bartók's melodies, which seem to enter a different harmonic world and transition into free improvisational games with such ease and naturalness that the listener may forget that the musical process started from a melody for children. At the same time, the compositions give the melodies a different mood from the arrangements usually heard.
